Improving Connectivity, Growing e-Commerce in Urban and Remote Areas of Mexico
Marc Langston, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Enterprise Networks
If the last few years have taught us anything, the need for reliable internet is key to staying connected and keeping government entities and businesses open and running.
For Mexico, COVID-19 changed the population’s internet consumption habits, accelerating the country’s digitalization and growing Mexican e-commerce.
Data from the Mexican Association of Online Sales (Asociación Mexicana de Venta Online or AMVO) shows that Mexico’s e-commerce grew by 27% during 2021, over the previous year. For the past three years, Mexico has ranked in the top five countries with the biggest e-commerce growth in the world.
Mexico’s telecom industry has seen a significant transformation over the years to keep up with demand. The Mexican Internet Association states by the end of 2021 the country had 89.5 million Internet users, representing 75.7% of the population over the age of six. But those Internet users are highly concentrated with 77% located in urban populations versus only 48% in rural settings.
With an estimated 20 million people living in communities without broadband coverage, millions of potential business opportunities are left out of the digital ecosystem.
GlobalSat (GSAT), a top-tier Mexican telecommunications company, is helping to achieve a goal of universal connectivity. The company has been providing connectivity for 25 years to thousands of locations across Mexico including government and enterprise customers.
GSAT recently added Intelsat’s FlexEnterprise to its connectivity toolbox to accommodate growth and improve the services it is delivering to many existing locations.
So why did GSAT decide to add FlexEnterprise and how did they set up so quickly?
Initial and ongoing support from Intelsat
Seasoned satellite service providers like GSAT appreciate level-set expectations and streamlined processes ready to address any issues that may arise. Intelsat’s carefully considered onboarding process is key to driving both short- and long-term customer success.
Within just a couple of weeks, GSAT was fully operational, successfully migrating 250 sites.
Cost-effectiveness and coverage
With the recent launch of our IS-40e satellite, the Flex service has been strengthened across North and Central America and the Caribbean region. Higher throughputs using relatively inexpensive equipment at remote sites means GSAT can efficiently meet the needs of financial institutions and local government customers. The managed Flex platform also allows GSAT to deliver services without new investment in its own satellite-management equipment. The result? A cost-effective solution delivering predictable, enterprise-grade services across a region where GSAT sees potential to expand.
Service beyond satellite
In addition to offering nationwide connectivity, GSAT leverages several other FlexEnterprise features to cater to service provider needs and business goals. These features include equipment collocated at Intelsat’s teleport, public IP addresses, and dedicated VPN connectivity from Intelsat’s teleport, enabling them to craft tailored solutions as required.
Ease-of-use with Intelsat SMP
One of the standout features for GSAT is ease of use, thanks to Intelsat’s Service Management Portal (SMP). SMP streamlines processes by allowing GSAT to self-provision new sites, access historical usage reports, and monitor services in real time. It also allows GSAT to make changes quickly and easily. Plus, Intelsat’s 24/7 Network Operations Center is just a phone call away for additional support.
“SMP provides us with a welcome level of autonomy,” said GSAT CEO Eric Cataño. “We’ve greatly reduced the time and effort to bring up new sites, and making changes to our services can often be done in just minutes and at times that fit with our customers’ schedules.”
Now, beyond its initial migration of 250 sites, GlobalSat is positioned to build new services and quickly meet the connectivity needs of customers in whatever region the company may operate.
The combination of a technically sound service that meets the needs of modern enterprises and a platform that provides both stability and flexibility is the foundation upon which Flex services are built.
Regional telecom providers around the world use FlexEnterprise service, taking advantage of its high throughput, easy-to-use management portal, and flexible features to bring enterprise-grade connectivity to customers wherever they need it.
