Do you love watching big sporting events from the comfort of your couch? What about current events like the latest news and top stories? Watching live programming wouldn’t be possible without Occasional Use solutions. We sat down with Intelsat’s Vice President and General Manager of Media, Pascale Fromont to learn more.
Q: Why do broadcasters look to satellite for handling distribution of their live events?
A: Broadcasters need solutions that are relevant, timely, and reliably distributed to viewers. Satellite provides the coverage as well as the reliability and security needed to ensure high-quality, clear pictures of live events are delivered anywhere on the globe, meeting the expectations of today’s audiences.
Q: End-to-end managed transport services are starting to play a key role in full-time distribution. Are there any managed services available for broadcasters looking for Occasional Use solutions?
A: Intelsat just rolled out a new multi-channel per carrier platform that is dedicated for those broadcasters looking for coverage on an occasional basis. This platform is available on Galaxy 31 (G-31) and provides high-powered coverage over North America for live sports and events.
Q: What services are included in Intelsat’s Occasional Use managed media service offering?
A: In addition to the platform on G-31, broadcasters will also be able to utilize the rest of Intelsat’s managed media portfolio which includes terrestrial IntelsatOne transport, encoding, and uplink services to the dedicated MCPC platform, ensuring broadcasters have all the necessary tools for successful live event coverage.
Q: What is Galaxy 31 (G-31) and how does it benefit broadcasters?
A: G-31 is one of our high-performance media satellites that was launched in 2022 as part of Intelsat’s Galaxy fleet refresh plan. Located at 121W, G-31 is a prime orbital location that offers unmatched cable headend penetration, reaching 100 million viewers across North America, making it an ideal choice for broadcasters.
Q: Are there any upcoming sporting events that will be using Intelsat’s occasional services?
A. A major soccer confederation will be the first to distribute live match coverage using the G-31 MCPC. That will happen around in early Q2 2024.
