A Year in Review: Deepening Customer Relationships, Delivering on the Multi-Orbit Promise & Record Setting Network Achievements Made 2023 a Year of Stellar Accomplishments
Clay McConnell, Senior Vice President, Communications & Marketing
Coming off the second consecutive year of revenue growth and significant new innovations across the business, Intelsat is ready to unleash its full potential in 2024. Before we do, let’s look back at some of the amazing achievements and milestones of 2023.
Multi-Orbit is Here
From the remote Falkland Islands to commercial air carriers like Air Canada, Aerolineas Argentina, and Alaska Airlines, customers chose robust and reliable multi-orbit connectivity combining the breadth of GEO with the global coverage and low latency benefits of LEO, all accessible via one set of smaller, lighter weight equipment and, most notably, a new electronically steered array (ESA) antenna.
C-Band Project Success
In yet another demonstration of the company’s managed services capabilities, we completed the C-band clearing project for 5G ahead of expectations. By successfully migrating our share of spectrum with minimal disruption to broadcast and media customers, we capitalized on FCC financial incentives while showcasing our team’s ability to execute complex projects against tight deadlines with precision and success.
Record Setting Network and Product Expansion
Expanded network reach in space and on the ground, along with new product innovations, were key highlights of 2023. We successfully completed launches of an industry record 8 new GEO satellites in a 10-month span while increasing our coverage with the addition of new teleports in Europe and Brazil. Elsewhere, IntelsatOne IP launched to provide media customers with new and more reliable network connectivity options as well as increased flexibility in content distribution.
Deepening Global Customer Relationships:
New partnerships and contract wins with new and existing customers around the world and across all facets of the business were many in 2023.
In June, longtime customer Japan Airlines committed to upgrading 50 Boeing 737s and 767s to Intelsat’s 2Ku inflight connectivity solution. In April, PBS chose Intelsat as its exclusive satellite provider of education, music, and arts content, linking to 150 affiliates across the U.S. Over the summer, we partnered with Lintasarta, an Indonesian information and communication technology company, to bring connectivity to the most remote areas in Indonesia. In the maritime sector, Marlink renewed its agreement for high throughput global capacity on the seas.
In the government arena, the U.S. Army awarded Intelsat with its first ever Satellite Communications as a Managed Service contract for multi-orbit satellite communications. We secured a place on the Department of Defense’s Proliferated Low Earth Orbit program to deliver LEO commercial satellite bandwidth, equipment, and services. Finally, as part of a consortium with Babcock Integrated Technology, we were awarded a contract with the UK MOD’s Skynet Network to enable vital communications to the UK Armed Forces.
Management Team in the Spotlight
It was also a year of accolades and recognition for the Intelsat executive and management teams. CEO Dave Wajsgras earned WashingtonExec’s CEO of the Year award. We expanded our management committee and added new talent to penetrate new markets, emphasize service delivery, and continue to move up the value chain with existing customers.
Brand Momentum
The Intelsat brand has never been more visible or prominent, due largely to the successful global brand awareness campaign launched and executed in 2023. The campaign was highlighted by published content in the most respected and recognized media titles, captivating creative advertising splashed on digital billboards and signage, and supplemented by increased engagement and connections with customers at strategic industry events and workshops.
With 2023 firmly in the books, we’re riding the momentum into 2024 as we aim to deliver additional innovations and greater value for Intelsat customers – and more deeply cement our leadership position in the satellite industry.
