Intelsat, American Airlines Finalize Multi-Orbit Inflight Connectivity Deal
Electronically Steered Array (ESA) antenna testing on schedule
MCLEAN, Va. – Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks and leading provider of in-flight connectivity (IFC), finalized an agreement with American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) to extend their satellite connectivity to nearly 500 regional jet aircraft. Installations of the high-throughput, multi-orbit system will start later this year.
“Our recent commercial aviation success with major airlines validates our approach, offering consistent and reliable service tailored to the unique needs and uses of each airline,” said CEO Dave Wajsgras. “American’s decision to install Intelsat’s system on regional jets demonstrates that world-class airlines see the value of a multi-orbit system to deliver their passengers access to more throughput and the best overall user experience across their aircraft fleet.”
American plans to convert the current air-to-ground system on the CRJ-700, CRJ-900, EMB-170 and EMB-175 aircraft operated on its behalf to Intelsat’s new ESA solution. The ESA antenna is less than three inches tall and operates on both Intelsat’s family of geo-stationary satellites and on Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The Intelsat product consortium includes Ball Aerospace, Stellar Blu Systems and OneWeb.
“At American Airlines our goal is to deliver an easy and enjoyable experience by keeping customers connected to what matters most to them and entertained while inflight,” said Raphael Girardoni, American Airlines Managing Director of Customer Experience, Product and Design.
