Intelig Secures Capacity on Intelsat 14 to Expand Cellular Backhaul Services in Brazil

Luxembourg, 24 May 2010

Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced that Brazil’s Intelig, a leading fixed telecommunications provider, has signed a multi-year capacity contract on Intelsat’s recently launched Intelsat 14 satellite (IS-14) located at 315º E.

In late 2009, Intelig was acquired by TIM, one of the largest mobile operators in Brazil. As a result of the acquisition, the company has integrated its fixed and wireless network infrastructures. By using Intelsat’s capacity on IS-14, Intelig will be able to expand its network that serves more than 41 million mobile users.

Over the years, Intelig has utilized Intelsat’s satellites to deploy a modern, all-digital nationwide network that provides voice and data solutions for residential, corporate and carrier customers. This additional IS-14 capacity will enable Intelig to deliver high demand mobile applications and other service offerings that support the country’s growing requirements for reliable voice and data services well beyond the Brazilian urban centers.

“The IS-14 satellite provides us with the coverage we need to support the progression and convergence of cellular services, helping us meet the long-term needs of our growing customer base,” said Leonardo Cifali, Director of Engineering and Operations for Intelig. “The Intelsat system already has enabled us to offer broadband networks to our government customers, provide maximum network efficiency for our enterprise customers and we now look forward to expanding our wireless telephony services to the most remote areas of Brazil.”

“Our satellites provide the world’s leading telecommunication operators the connectivity desired to deliver a wide range of services, such as wireless communications, enabling its growth within remote regions where terrestrial capacity is unavailable or underdeveloped,” said Carmen Gonzalez-Sanfeliu, Intelsat’s Vice President, Latin America & the Caribbean. “Our infrastructure will help extend Intelig’s network to offer better service, support new applications and reach new customers with wireless solutions.”

Intelsat executives will be available for meetings at TelCap’s International Telecoms Week’s (ITW 2010) Conference and Exhibition, in Washington, D.C. 24-26 May. Intelsat’s meeting pavilion will be located on the second level in the Thurgood Marshall Ballroom at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel.
