Intelsat, Ltd., the world's leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced that Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SeaMobile, Inc., has contracted for Intelsat capacity to expand the range of satellite-based services MTN provides to its maritime customers, including the world's largest cruise lines.
MTN will use capacity on the following Intelsat satellites: Intelsat 707, Intelsat 903, Intelsat 906, Horizons 1 and Intelsat 10-02, located at 307º E, 325.5º E, 64.15º E, 127º W, and 1º W, respectively. With this capacity, MTN will offer on-board services, such as access for fixed and mobile phones, Internet, television and other connectivity needs to passengers and crews sailing the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and the Caribbean, Mediterranean and North Seas.
“Today passengers expect the same amenities while at sea as they do at home. Services such as Internet access and using cell phones while onboard have gained popularity and satellite transmission from Intelsat allows us to provide these applications, transforming the on-board experience,” said Richard Hadsall, Senior Vice President and CTO, MTN Satellite Services. "We continue to leverage our business through our relationship with Intelsat and its global system. It provides the coverage and network consistency we need in order to best serve our customers."
"The increase in daily use of broadband technology within the maritime sector continues to create demand for fixed satellite services as ships upgrade their networks,” said Jay Yass, Intelsat’s Vice President, Network Services. "Intelsat, with global beams and prime coverage of both land and ocean regions, is well-suited to provide the maritime sector with advanced transmissions needed for today’s ship-to-shore communications."
Intelsat will be exhibiting at Booth #109 at SATELLITE 2009, the leading tradeshow for the global satellite industry, which is being held at the Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C., 25-27 March.
