Rome, Italy and Pembroke, Bermuda, 2 June 2008
Intelsat, Ltd., the world’s leading commercial satellite service provider, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), jointly announced today that the FAO’s forthcoming World Food Security Summit in Rome to be held 3-5 June will be broadcast globally via the Intelsat satellite network.
As the official satellite capacity sponsor, Intelsat will use its industry-leading network of satellite and terrestrial facilities for the collection and distribution of the Summit proceedings. The overall purpose of the World Food Security Summit is to address food security issues in the face of soaring food prices and the new challenges of climate change and energy security. Proceedings of the Summit will be accessible in real time from almost any point around the globe, broadcast over a hybrid mix of Intelsat’s fiber and teleport facilities, plus at least five Intelsat communications satellites. Intelsat has made its communications network available throughout the last 10 years for the global transmission of major FAO events.
"Intelsat's generous support over the years has helped enable global awareness of the major initiatives in FAO's ongoing fight against hunger and malnutrition," FAO Director Jacques Diouf said. "Once again, Intelsat will be with us as world leaders meet here to seek solutions to the current food price crisis and, hopefully, set world agriculture on a new course."
“The need for global distribution of video content is a major trend in our business,” said Intelsat CEO, David McGlade. “Intelsat’s unique ability to connect the planet Earth carries with it a responsibility to support those organizations that are striving to improve the quality of life in the global community that we serve. It is our honor to support the United Nation’s FAO, and to contribute to its efforts to resolve the complex issue of world hunger.”
Intelsat is the leading provider of fixed satellite services (FSS) worldwide, delivering information and entertainment for many of the world’s leading media and network companies, multinational corporations, Internet service providers and governmental agencies. Intelsat’s satellite, teleport and fiber infrastructure is unmatched in the industry, setting the standard for advanced transmissions of video, data and voice services. With the globalization of content, broadband, telecom, HD and IPTV fueling next-generation growth, the ever-expanding universe of satellite communications is the cornerstone of today's Intelsat. Real-time, advanced communications with people anywhere in the world is closer, by far.
