Intelsat to Transmit Olympics Across Europe in HD

Intelsat, the only global satellite operator to provide coverage of every Olympic Game since 1968, and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have signed a multi-transponder deal to provide video carriage of the 2008 Summer Games to Europe.

"By using Intelsat to deliver the Summer Games, we are confident that our members will benefit from the reliable service Intelsat offers when it comes to large scale events,"
— Stefan Kürten,
Director of the Eurovision Operations Department

The EBU will use C-/Ku-band cross-strap capacity on the Intelsat 706 satellite, located at 50.2 degrees East, to distribute the all high-definition event to its members. The EBU, of which a large proportion of the major European broadcasters are members, provides a full range of network services, including but not limited to HD transmissions to broadband video carriage.

"We are the only satellite operator able to offer cross-strapped C-band uplink and Ku-band downlink capacity from Beijing, enabling direct Ku-band reception into Europe for the EBU. The 2008 Summer Games provides another milestone in Intelsat's unsurpassed track record in successfully supporting live, global HD transmissions."
— Jean-Philippe Gillet,
Intelsat's Regional Vice President, Europe & Middle East

Cheers to Euro 2008!

by Justine Gardner

euro2008Spain's UEFA EURO winners received a heroes' welcome from tens of thousands of supporters as they brought the Henri Delaunay trophy back to Madrid. Through it all, Intelsat provided connectivity and services to customers in Europe, Asia and Latin America over 5 different satellites: IS-3r x-strap, IS-4 Ku-Band, IS -7 C-Band, IS-905 Ku-Band and IS-904 C-Band. During the middle of the event when dual matches were taking place total bandwidth used was over 100 MHz.

"We are looking to solidify our position in Europe, specifically for Europe to Europe connectivity. Our commitment to this is demonstrated with the 108 MHz of 905 Ku-Band capacity that has been dedicated for Occasional Use and which has been used by numerous broadcasters for their coverage of the Euro 2008 event."
— Michael DeMarco,
Intelsat Vice President, Video Services

Spanish Rights Holder

Intelsat designed and implemented a fully-managed solution using IS-905 Ku-Band capacity for our Spanish rights holder, Sogecable. They came to us with their requirements for the event which included a mixture of HD and SD services that needed to be delivered back to Spain. We proposed a solution that would allow Sogecable to manipulate the configuration of their MCPC to meet their needs. With Spain making it through to the finals, the tournament has been closely followed by the Spanish many of whom are enjoying match coverage in HD.

Non-rights Holders

For those broadcasters who are not rights holders, Intelsat deployed roving satellite news-gathering (SNG) in Switzerland and Austria to assist non-rights holders with their coverage of the event as it unfolded. We provided services from all venue cities in both countries, offering tape playouts and live shots of the stadium so that people could report on the event from conveniently located facilities.

Carrying the Torch

by Kofei Tang

CCTVIn April, Intelsat assisted CCTV in its coverage of the Olympic torch relay passing through several major cities of the world. CCTV International is the English-language 24-hour news channel of China Central Television, China´s largest national TV network.

The stories were backhauled via Intelsat's fiber and satellite back to Beijing. CCTV also chose Intelsat to transport torch relay international feeds to broadcasters all over the world. This was just another day for CCTV at the satellite news desk. But for viewers, this is the beginning of the much anticipated Beijing 2008 Summer Games. Stay tuned as we gear up for Beijing!

Satellite Operators Meet Olympics Challenge

by Bert Quesada

Providing coverage of important sporting events such as the Olympics, the World Cup, the Pan American Games and Copa America can effectively help broadcasters grow their market.

Considering the important nature of this business, few broadcasters are willing to risk using a fiber-only platform for live video feeds. One need only remember the 1994 World Cup broadcasts to understand fiber’s limitations: extended fiber outages occurred daily.

This is why leading broadcasters and news organizations depend upon Intelsat to provide a superior platform. We offer the most available capacity and an on-site, dedicated Special-Events/Occasional Use (OU) team. This team provides a full range of services, from simple videotape play-out to a complex production center with editing and live camera services.

Intelsat ensures complete control by managing content on its network from the origination to destination, using the most efficient and reliable transport. Digital content can also be transported end-to-end in first generation.

Successful Transmission From Start to Finish

The 2008 Olympic Games is a great example of a mega sporting event made better by utilizing OU satellite services. As the only global satellite operator to provide coverage of every Olympic Game since 1968, Intelsat has the most experience serving broadcasters with on-demand services to meet traffic requirements anywhere on earth.

By partnering with an experienced transmission service provider, media companies, broadcasters and cable programmers can ensure that live video from the Olympics is successfully transmitted to viewers from start to finish, without interruption and within budget.

Broadcasters have long recognized that major satellite operators are ideally suited to meet these requirements consistently and affordably. Whether it is transmitting content within country or transmitting material overseas, satellite provides an instant, reliable infrastructure – with the added benefit of encryption to protect against rights infringement.

The 2008 Olympics will be the first produced totally in HD, and Intelsat will work with broadcasters to provide HD transmission to their doorsteps. This includes providing on-site HD encoding, format conversions and transport.

Update on uPod

Joe Calzaghe vs. Bernard Hopkins, Las Vegas, Nevada

by Donna Palumbo

uPOD"The recent Joe Calzaghe versus Bernard Hopkins fight was an extremely prestigious broadcast for Setanta Sports. It was essential for us to have a continuous, high quality transmission in Las Vegas for the viewers in the UK. Therefore, we needed absolute confidence in the satellite uplink provided. The opportunity to work with SISLink, a long established provider of satellite broadcast services to Setanta in Europe, was important in allowing us to have the confidence that we could provide a faultless broadcast. SISLink have recently launched their services in the US in partnership with Intelsat and supplied Setanta with one of their new uPod Hybrid SUV uplink vehicles for this high profile sporting event, which worked faultlessly on the night. Setanta and SISLink work together on many sports broadcasts and we look forward to continuing this relationship in Europe and beyond."
— Sean 0’Hara,
Setanta Sports Head of Commercial Operations

On 19 April 2008, SISLink provided an uPod SUV satellite uplink at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas for one of the major UK sports channels. It was a huge pay-per-view–event, and SISLink provided playout facilities and a continuous live transmission for the duration of the afternoon and evening, leading up to the prestigious Calzaghe versus Hopkins fight. Intelsat provided satellite capacity for the event.

WANTED: HD Trucks in the Fall

Sports fans enjoy the detail and experience provided by HDTV, especially football fans. As technology improves and consumer purchases of HDTV increases, so does the demand for HD programming. The explosive growth in HDTV could cause a casualty in one important component in the sports world: the supply of HD trucks.

“If a truck is not booked now or a network wants to change or add something it's going to be a problem,"
— Ken Aagaard,
CBS Sports EVP, Operations, Engineering and Production Services

The Sports Video Group (http://www.sportsvideo.org/portal/artman/publish/article_11371.shtml) reports the projected demand for HD trucks during the months of August through January. During these months, college and professional sports games are at their most unpredictable peak and broadcasters can choose to swap games at any given time. The approach of the U.S. Presidential Elections could also drive growth.

Climbing Mount Everest for the Red Cross

by J. Armand Musey

Intelsat is proud to have been one of the expedition sponsors for J. Armand Musey’s climb to Mount Everest to raise funds for the American Red Cross’ International Response Fund (IRF). We asked Mr. Musey to share with us a personal message and some highlights of this memorable climb.

View from Summit“I'd like to thank the expedition sponsors, including Intelsat, SES, iDirect and GeoEye who enabled this trip to raise almost $50,000 for the Red Cross's International Response Fund (IRF), as well as other in-kind sponsors, particularly Longbottom Communications for the public relations efforts and Affordable Creative Solutions for the web work. The disasters in Myanmar and China have stretched the IRF’s resources. I greatly appreciate their contributions. When things got difficult, the sponsors' commitments and knowledge of need that the funds were addressing helped me stay focused on the climb.

Six Inches from Disaster

The few hundred yards before the summit, known as the Hillary Step, was particularly awkward as it involves moderate-level rock climbing. I also experienced the added difficulty of doing it at almost 29,000 feet, and bundled in thick layers of clothes carrying a backpack with two oxygen tanks and other equipment. A fall would carry someone a least a few thousand feet down. At one point on the Hillary Step, after walking across what I thought was a solid snow-covered section, I turned and saw a large piece of the section fall about 5,000 feet down into China. If I had walked perhaps six inches to the other side, I probably would have gone down with it.

Horizontal ladders in the ice fall. The abyss below the ladder is several hundred feet deep.A Good-bye Glance

The summit was windy but the view was excellent. After spending about 40 minutes there, we were getting cold and knew it was time to go down. Going down the Hillary Step was somewhat easier but, after spending 8 weeks trying to reach the summit, the decision to come down was hard. Although tired, I wanted to look more as I knew I would never see this magnificent view again. I kept looking back and around to ensure I did not miss a single characteristic of this remote location.”

— J. Armand Musey

Intelsat Partners with Pangea Day for Live Broadcast Spanning Five Continents

Intelsat was recently the sole satellite transmission provider for the non-profit Pangea Day Organization inspired by the 2006 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Prize wish of documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim.

“I wish to bring the world together for one day a year through the power of film.” — Jehane Noujaim

Pangea Day endeavors to bring the world together and promote understanding and tolerance through film. Pangea Day is a celebration of what unites humanity, rather than what divides it. Through these screenings of the four-hour program filled with visionary speakers and great music the hope is that people watch and connect with each other, eventually touching everyone on the planet. Intelsat is pleased to support such a worthy cause.

The May 10th film and arts festival program had live sites from Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, Rwanda and the United States. Millions gathered around the world to watch on the program at digital cinemas, television, the internet and mobile phones.

Pangea Day
“Globalization of content is a major driver of growth in our company, and any event that literally ‘Connects the Planet Earth’ is a perfect branding opportunity for Intelsat. By supporting this event we were able to demonstrate to special event programmers Intelsat’s unique capability to provide global connectivity from a single source. What’s more, our special events team delivered a perfect event, from beginning to end.”
— Dianne VanBeber,
Intelsat Vice President of Investor Relations

Pangea Day was coordinated across six venues around the world with Intelsat providing contribution and distribution transmission services. In all, millions of viewers in over 100 countries watched the live event via five Intelsat satellites and a number of our teleports.

Intelsat Transmits Leading FAO Food Summit

FAOThe Intelsat satellite network broadcast globally the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) World Food Security Summit in Rome on 3-5 June 2008. The purpose of the World Food Security Summit is to address food security issues in the face of soaring food prices. As the official satellite capacity sponsor, Intelsat used its industry-leading network of satellite and terrestrial facilities for the collection and distribution of the Summit proceedings. The Summit proceedings were accessible in real-time from almost any point around the globe.

"Intelsat's generous support over the years has helped enable global awareness of the major initiatives in FAO's ongoing fight against hunger and malnutrition. Once again, Intelsat will be with us as world leaders meet here to seek solutions to the current food price crisis and, hopefully, set world agriculture on a new course."
— Jacques Diouf,
FAO Director

The Summit was broadcast over a hybrid mix of Intelsat’s fiber and teleport facilities, plus at least five Intelsat communications satellites. Intelsat has made its communications network available throughout the last 10 years for the global transmission of major FAO events.
