Globalizing News, Sports and Entertainment

Programmers Use Intelsat to Reach Global Audience

globeProgrammers, broadcasters and content services providers are seeing increased opportunities to distribute content to viewers in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. It is no wonder that the globalization of regional content is one of the most important business drivers in the media sector today and one that is enabled by satellite technology. Intelsat's satellite fleet, including 27 satellites that host regional video neighborhoods, provides unparalleled distribution services to global markets. Intelsat offers content service providers the access they need to reach key demographic viewers.

“60% of our revenue is derived from the global delivery of media content,” said John Reverend, Head of Business Development, North America for SatLink. “We still continue to see it grow, especially in the Middle East.”

SatLink is a leading provider of transmission solutions for global content distribution of video and network services. Reverend added that his company has particularly experienced an influx of business from niche broadcasters who require access beyond their immediate borders to ethnic communities throughout the developed and developing regions.

20 Years of HD“Our business with Intelsat has assisted us in expanding our customers’ program reach into such regions. Intelsat’s satellite footprints are very attractive for us, providing the ideal coverage and penetration needed as we expand the viewing audience for our customers.”

Discovery Communications, LLC is another global company that today reaches more than 1.5 billion subscribers in 170 countries. A long-time customer of Intelsat, Discovery reaches a worldwide audience via the Intelsat network. “We are seeing a great deal of growth in Europe, specifically in the Central and Eastern European countries of the Czech Republic and Romania, as well as a growing demand for our programming in Asia and Latin America,” said Charlie Myers, Vice President, Distribution and Technology, Media Technology, Production and Operations, for Discovery Communications.
“Intelsat has been very responsive in working with us and providing distribution solutions to our needs. While others do not look at the big picture, Intelsat does and that helps us achieve our business objectives quicker and in a more efficient manner as we seek new opportunities to expand our programming throughout the world.”

Tim Jackson, Vice President, Media Product Management, Intelsat, said, "Intelsat will continue to play a key role in the expansion of programming that unites the global village with international news, sports and entertainment. Intelsat understands the requirements of programmers and broadcasters, from reliability to expanding distribution. Our single integrated platform can achieve global delivery. It is our goal to know where our customers are headed so that the Intelsat system can take them there."

Intelsat Interference Management Initiative

Creating an "Interference-free" Space Environment

I3 logoIn the last INSIDER Intelsat reported its efforts to rally industry support by teaming with satellite operators around the globe; how Intelsat has been taking the message to the industry; and, how the company is leveraging customer input in an advisory committee to ensure a clear and strong focus on areas that make a difference. Intelsat continues to work across all those areas.

Rallying Industry Support
Intelsat is pleased to announce that Satmex and Arabsat have joined the seven original members of the Satellite Operator Interference Working Group. There is strength in numbers, and to date Intelsat has been encouraged with the participation and spirit of cooperation to tackle issues related to radio frequency interference (RFI).

Taking the Message to Industry
In April, Intelsat representatives participated in SatCom Africa and NAB in Las Vegas, Nevada. At each of these meetings, Intelsat executives met with customers at Intelsat sponsored events and reported on the initiative to a receptive audience. In May, Intelsat participated in the WBU-ISOG in Tokyo where the Carrier ID issue was a central theme. Intelsat will be conducting a panel session at the ITW on Tuesday, 2 June 2009 in Washington, D.C. on the topic of interference management and mitigation efforts. This panel session will be followed the next day by a general overview of the I3 initiative in the Intelsat Innovation Theatre at ITW.

Moving Forward
Beginning in July, Intelsat’s Connections calendar starts with the Connections Americas Conference to be held New York City, 15-17 July 2009. As one part of the company's effort to turn “feedback into action,” Intelsat will provide a complete report on the progress of the I3 initiative at that meeting and the subsequent Connections meetings in Europe/Middle East and Africa.

As tangible progress is made we will be reporting updates to customers via the MyIntelsat site and in future editions of the Intelsat INSIDER.

Intelsat Delivers a Knock-out Punch for PSSI, Live from Las Vegas

PSSI at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

When pay-per-view viewers tuned in to watch this spring’s much-anticipated boxing event, Pacquiao vs. Hatton, it was PSSI Global Services and Strategic Television, utilizing Intelsat’s satellite and teleport network, that delivered this headline event to a global audience.

For more than two decades, PSSI and Strategic Television has delivered major awards shows, sporting events, such as NASCAR, and live coverage of the annual New York Marathon to audiences around the world.

PSSI Global Services used capacity from seven Intelsat satellites to uplink the match from its nine newsgathering trucks outside the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip, delivering HD and SD paths for multilateral and unilateral feeds. Intelsat satellites also downlinked the pathways to three continents, providing viewers in Latin America, Asia and Europe the opportunity to see the event "live" from Las Vegas. In addition to satellite capacity, PSSI Global used Intelsat teleports in Napa and Atlanta for turnaround services, content encryption and down conversion of the feeds from HD to SD.

Robert Lamb, President of PSSI Global, said that for such live, special events, access is paramount. “We need to deliver our programming to the major broadcasters and cable entities—Intelsat’s satellites not only have the strategic footprint we need to accomplish our delivery requirements, but an Intelsat satellite is virtually always in line of site of any location we are operating from. As we grow our business internationally, we are confident that the global reach of Intelsat’s infrastructure will enable us to achieve our business objectives.”

Intelsat on Location for Summit of the Americas

Summit of the Americas 2009U.S. President Barack Obama continues to draw attention anywhere he travels. Thousands watched President Obama shake hands with President Chavez during Summit of the Americas 2009, held in Trinidad and Tobago, from 17-19 April 2009, due in part to Intelsat's distribution of the event.

Intelsat partnered with Globecast to provide broadcast services from the International Media Center (IMC), inside the new Financial Tower facing the Port of Spain.

Each presidential delegation received the presidential speeches made during the plenary sessions. In addition, the delegations from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Argentina, Brazil, and St. Kitts and Nevis all received footage for airing at home.

Intelsat Connects the World to the Summit
Intelsat transmitted over 27 hours of coverage in SD and the opening ceremony on 18 MHz HD. These transmissions included video signals live from the sessions for direct uplink to satellite, playback services, and live shots, including a three-person sit-down interview for a Barbados morning show. The Intelsat 805 carried the event on C-band capacity in both NTSC and PAL standards.

CNN covered 57 hours of the Summit via the Intelsat network using capacity on the Intelsat 3 satellite. Before that, during President Obama’s stop in Mexico en route to Trinidad, CNN used the same capacity for an additional 39 hours of transmissions.
