Leading the Way – Best Practices on Global Video Distribution
An Interview with Intelsat SVP Kurt Riegelman

Kurt RiegelmanIn the summer of 2012, Intelsat launched three new satellites, all with multiple MCPC platforms, to replenish video distribution capacity across three continents.  Together with IntelsatOne, these satellites provide customers unparalleled access to South America, Africa and Asia, and their video neighborhoods offer customers up to 100 percent cable headend penetration.

Intelsat SVP of Global Sales Kurt Riegelman spoke to Insider about the increasing trend of customers utilizing multiple delivery platforms to take their media content global.

To what extent are your customers taking advantage of multiple Intelsat solutions, beyond just Intelsat’s video neighborhoods, for media content distribution?

We are finding that customers are increasingly leveraging multiple elements, including our MCPC platforms, teleports and IntelsatOne, to reach new viewers and expand their services.

For example, Discovery Communications is utilizing full-time transponders for cable, as well as our MCPC platforms for more targeted delivery. In addition, NHK utilizes capacity across several of our satellites, as well as IntelsatOne and our teleports, for global media delivery.

We are also seeing many of our reseller customers utilize IntelsatOne and our MCPC services as part of their total solutions to the end user. Like our broadcaster customers, they enjoy the flexibility and economics afforded by these solutions in places where they have to react quickly, or where they don’t wish to make a major infrastructure commitment.

Describe the growth in HD programming with your global customers.

A key theme at IBC in Amsterdam among our customers was their plans to reduce SD feeds to make more room for HD growth, as they become more focused on delivering targeted in-region content.

With more than 30 DTH platforms and video neighborhoods on 28 satellites, Intelsat now distributes over 450 HD channels across the globe.  HD is growing quickly, with customers adding 32 percent more HD channels to our fleet in the last year, and many customers are choosing a variety of ways to distribute this content.  Discovery Communications, for example, plans to use the new Intelsat 19 satellite to distribute HD content from Intelsat’s MCPC platform in Singapore to cable headends across Asia-Pacific.

I also had lengthy discussions with customers about 4K and 8K – two technologies that seem to represent the evolution of HD programming. I see the industry taking a much more careful approach in introducing these two technologies, versus the craze that has surrounded 3D in recent years.

Teleports are playing an increasingly important role in the communications architecture. How are they being utilized by media companies?

The teleport has evolved greatly from its initial use as a satellite RF facility. Today, teleports represent an access point to a network, where multiple delivery platforms exist. These media- and data-centric facilities act as content hubs, providing customers a variety of options for distribution.  Intelsat also has developed restoration services at our eight teleports around the globe to ensure disaster recovery and back-up services are provided to customers in the event of an emergency.

Why is IntelsatOne a preferred solution for customers seeking to distribute content within a large region or across the globe?

IntelsatOne is a value-added distribution tool that provides point-to-point distribution of content via a triple-redundant, highly scalable architecture. IntelsatOne allows such Intelsat customers as BBC and NHK to ‘connect the dots’ and build a reliable, global distribution solution through one access point on the network.

It is a solution that offers customers ground and satellite access for MCPC, OU, full-time or part-time services. IntelsatOne provides a simple, end-to-end solution that perfectly complements the security, redundancy and reliability offered by our satellite fleet. Customers seeking the complementary capabilities of a ground and satellite solution are increasingly turning to IntelsatOne.

In particular, we are finding that the end-user, our teleport partners and our value-added resellers are taking full advantage of IntelsatOne. In addition, our agreements with BT and PCCW Global expand the presence of IntelsatOne, offering customers networking solutions and access to the world’s premier video neighborhoods.

Intelsat's New Fleet Additions
Combined coverage of IS-19, IS-20 and IS-21
Intelsat 19 replaced Intelsat 8 in August to serve the Asia-Pacific region. The Intelsat 19 video neighborhood boasts excellent penetration of key cable MSOs, with more than 37 million Pay-TV subscribers around the Pacific Rim. It also hosts the Pan Global TV and other DTH platforms over Australia and New Zealand.

Intelsat 20 began operations September 17, replacing Intelsat 10. Intelsat 20 provides premium programming carried by the top Indian cable MSOs and DTH operators, reaching an estimated 90 million pay TV subscribers across India. The satellite also hosts the largest DTH platform in Africa and provides C-band video distribution for Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Intelsat 21 was launched August 19 to replace Intelsat 9 at 302° East. The satellite, expected to begin service in early October, features C-band capacity for the premiere cable distribution neighborhood in Latin America, and Ku-band capacity that supports DTH services across Mexico.
