Intelsat's Regional VPs Share Their Insights from IBC
“I was excited to witness the latest industry trends at IBC, including a live 4K video feed at Sony’s booth that was on display at the show. Many of our customers expressed that while the equipment to support this technology is still cost prohibitive, and acceptance among broadcasters and consumers could take a while, it was still exciting to see 4K in action. The prevailing opinion by media companies seems to be that in the eyes of the consumer, 4K is more compelling at this point than 3D.

It was also clear to me that demand for high-definition programming across the globe remains strong, as our customers have added 32 percent more HD channels to our fleet in the last year.”

“At IBC, I heard from equipment and software manufacturers about Over-the-Top (OTT) technology.  Platform operators require multiple ways of reaching their subs, and OTT, while a good option, could take a while to catch on as it is experiencing somewhat slow acceptance rates.  Time will tell how this technology is embraced among the industry.

Ultra HD and 4K were also front and center at IBC. In particular, I believe 4K will become a key differentiator for DTH operators planning to use this standard.  The new modulation techniques are allowing for much more bandwidth to be sent through a single transponder. This will benefit Occasional Use and full-time distribution both for video and non-video traffic. This could also make satellite distribution more cost effective for certain applications.”

“The globalization of African content was a hot topic of discussion at the show, as the proliferation of DTH and DTT continues across Africa. With 23 satellites serving the continent as part of our multi-billion dollar commitment, Intelsat remains the largest satellite operator in Africa.

The subject of 4K programming was also discussed as well. I believe 4K will ultimately come to Africa, but it could take a few years. There will first have to be improvements made to encoder and modulation technologies to take advantage of improved throughput to allow DTH operators to get a return on their investment.  I was impressed with the show and enjoyed meeting with our customers to hear more about their plans for growth.”

"At IBC in Amsterdam, the future of broadcasting was on full display. It’s clear to me that broadcasters and content providers understand that the adoption of Ultra HD and 4K is coming - the only question, is how long will it take? In addition, many non-linear content providers seem to be increasingly interested in IP distribution of video and putting their content on the Internet.

I also had the chance to talk with many of our customers about our launch of Intelsat EpicNG, which has been well received by our customers and the industry thus far."
