| NASA Shuttle, Savior of Intelsat 603, Flies into Retirement |
|
 NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavour, which began its career in a fascinating, low-orbit rescue of the Intelsat 603 satellite, recently made its final flight.
The first of Endeavour’s 25 missions took place in May 1992, and its primary mission was to attach a replacement rocket motor to Intelsat 603. The satellite had been stranded in low-Earth orbit for two years due to the failure of the upper stage of its launch vehicle.
Shuttle astronauts pulled Intelsat 603 into Endeavour’s cargo bay, attached a kick motor and returned it to space. From there, Intelsat 603 was boosted to geostationary orbit, where it served Intelsat customers for nearly 20 years.
Endeavour will spend its retirement at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. After a service life of nearly 20 years, Intelsat 603 is scheduled to be de-orbited in the first quarter of 2013. |
