Intelsat Network Expands NewWave Broadband’s Maritime Communications Offering
Luxembourg, 3 November 2010
Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, announced that NewWave Broadband Ltd., one of the major suppliers of maritime data services, signed a multi-transponder, multi-year contract for Ku-band capacity on two future Intelsat satellites. The Intelsat 19 (IS-19) and Intelsat 22 (IS-22) satellites, to be located at 166º E and 72º E respectively, are slated for launch in 2012 and will offer Ku-band beams optimized for maritime mobile communications and provide ocean coverage from the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region. NewWave Broadband will take advantage of these mobility beams to enhance the delivery of its maritime broadband services.
“Intelsat’s robust infrastructure offers us the scalable, true broadband network we require as we enhance our global Ku-band transmissions, especially in the Middle East, Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific regions,” said Steve McCabe, Director, NewWave Broadband. “Through this contract, our customers will benefit from a resilient, always-on global Ku-band platform.”
“Customers serving the maritime industry are seeking an affordable broadband solution that is able to handle advanced IP applications,” said Jay Yass, Intelsat’s Vice President, Network Services. “The mobility beams that are currently part of our future satellites demonstrate how we collaborate with our customers to plan and develop a network that meets their future business requirements.”
In addition to IS-19 and IS-22, Intelsat has designed mobility beams on two additional satellites that will be in service by 2013. These satellites, along with its IntelsatOneSM terrestrial platform, will enhance Intelsat’s global Ku-band fabric that is designed to address broadband requirements with total downstream carrier throughput of over 60Mbps. Intelsat will enable leading maritime value-added service providers, such as NewWave Broadband, to offer their customers high-speed voice and data services; the ability to traverse the world’s busiest shipping routes with seamless broadband connectivity; and the capability to receive robust quality of service and bandwidth efficiencies across multiple vessels.
Intelsat will be exhibiting at Offshore Communications 2010 at booth #308, 2-4 November in Houston, Texas.
