Intelsat Names Seasoned Executive and National Security Expert to Head Intelsat General Unit
Pembroke, Bermuda, 14 February 2007
Intelsat announced today the appointment of William Shernit as the new President of its subsidiary Intelsat General. Intelsat General provides innovative communications solutions primarily to military and civilian government customers.
“Intelsat wanted a seasoned business executive with a proven track record to head Intelsat General, but we also wanted someone who had served in the U.S. Government and understood the needs of our government customers,” said Dave McGlade, the CEO of Intelsat. “In Bill Shernit, we have the best of both worlds, a man whose career of outstanding achievement spanned service at a high level in the government and business leadership at a large government contractor.”
Mr. Shernit served 13 years at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he was responsible for a broad range of technical systems and advanced technologies. He then moved to private industry and joined BAE Systems, Inc. in 1989. He rose to become President of BAE Systems’ Information Technology group.
At BAE Systems, Mr. Shernit was responsible for successfully implementing strategic and operational plans for the IT group, as well as expanding the department through organic growth and acquisitions, and he helped to grow the BAE Systems IT group to a $1 billion enterprise. His group focused particularly on network-centric infrastructures and information-sharing among the intelligence community, homeland security agencies, and the warfighter.
“I am very much looking forward to leading Intelsat General,” said Mr. Shernit. “I am confident we can build on the solid foundation of performance and take to a new level Intelsat General’s service to the U.S. government and other governments.”
Mr. Shernit holds Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in New York.
