Customers’ Vital Contributions Receive Deserved Recognition

AfricaCom is always a great opportunity to connect with those involved in the digital economy in Africa. A highlight of the event is the annual AfricaCom Awards, billed as “Promoting Digital Excellence in Africa.” That’s something that Intelsat, serving Africa since 1965, is proud to support.

This year, Intelsat sponsored the “Changing Lives Award” at AfricaCom because it recognizes an initiative that has contributed to African communications, economic and social development. The idea of “changing lives” is built into our mission statement here at Intelsat, which is to “Deliver innovative content and connectivity solutions that create value for customers and transform quality of life.”

One company that is a great example of that mission is Liquid Telecom, the winner of the “Changing Lives Award” for providing “Free WiFi in Nakuru County” in Kenya.  We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Liquid Telecom on this prestigious recognition of their successful public private partnership with Nakura County, Kenya. Pictured is Jean-Philippe Gillet, Intelsat’s Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa, center, presenting the award to representatives of Liquid Telecom.

We also extend our congratulations to all of the nominees in this category, including Mindset Network, one of our customers, which uses our satellite capacity to deliver more than 1,500 hours of quality educational resources to schools, homes, community centers, teacher centers and public health facilities via on-demand and linear television broadcasts. The important content Mindset delivers ranges from health-related topics such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, TB and child survival, general and personal hygiene to physical sciences, mathematics, life sciences, geography, accounting, math literacy, business studies, economics, computer applications technology, information technology and English.

Also recognized at the event was Vodacom, an African mobile communications company and an Intelsat customer.  Vodacom was nominated in the “VSAT Innovation for Africa” category and won the award for the positive impact of their remote coverage project which significantly broadened the reach and delivery of VSAT services to communities throughout Africa.

Jean-Philippe stated. “We were proud to sponsor the Changing Lives Award and equally proud to see Mindset recognized for their important telemedicine and e-learning initiatives in the region and be there to witness Vodacom win an award for their project to connect the unconnected in DRC. Working closely with our partners, it’s humbling to see how our technology solutions can help transform the lives of the communities we serve.”
